What can I do to reduce stress

We’ve all experienced stress. It can feel like an unavoidable part of everyday life whether that be stress from work or stress from home. However, managing stress doesn’t mean it has to be complicated. By making small adjustments to your daily routine, you can reduce stress and improve your mental health as well as your physical health.

Here are some of our simple but effective methods to take stress away and bring calm and balance into your life. Whether you’re dealing with occasional stress or ongoing pressure, these techniques can help you navigate challenges with greater peace of resilience.

1.    How breathing exercise can help with stress

Without a doubt the quickest way to reduce stress is through deep breathing exercises. When stressed your breathing tends to become more shallow and rapid, which then sends a signal to your body to release stress hormones. Deep breathing exercises tend to help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety. A popular method that has helped people before is the box breathing method. The box breathing method is where you inhale for four seconds, hold your breath for four seconds, exhale for four seconds and once again hold your breath for four seconds before repeating. Practicing these techniques for just a couple of minutes a day will instantly calm your mind, slow your heart rate and provide you with a sense of peace, making it easier to tackle daily challenges.

2.    Prioritising sleep can benefit stress

Many people sacrifice sleep in order to try and complete work, however doing this is one of the leading causes of stress. When you are tired your body is not able to handle the daily challenges that come your way. By making sleep a priority and aiming to have 7-8 hours of sleep each night will help you to feel more refreshed and relaxed.

Reading a book or listening to calming music will help give a signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. This will help you to improve your sleep and leave you feeling more refreshed and better equipped to deal with stress the following day.

3.    Introduce a balanced diet

Whatever you eat plays a significant role in how you feel. People that do not feel great tend to eat food that comforts them i.e. high calorie foods. A poor diet can lead to changes in your blood sugar levels which can increase irritability and stress. Incorporating more fruits, vegetables and protein into your meals can help to provide you with steady energy levels and helps to regulate your mood throughout the day.

Another big factor that will help control stress is making sure you’re hydrated. Drinking more water can help to prevent dehydration.

4.    How to manage time correctly to help with stress

Stress can sometimes occur when you feel like you have too much to do or not having enough time to do something. By staying organised and managing your time effectively you can reduce that sense of being overwhelmed. Making a “to do” list everyday will help with managing your workload to help ensure you prioritise tasks according to their workload. Break larger tasks into smaller tasks making them more manageable.

As a cleaning company it’s important that we encourage our staff to schedule some time for themselves. When cleaners have that time for themselves they can prevent burn out and can ensure that a good standard of cleaning is performed.

5.    Know when to say “no”

It’s very easy to take on too many responsibilities out of desire to please others, but overcommitting to too many duties can lead to stress. Learning to say “no” when necessary is an important skill to practice. Setting boundaries and prioritising your well being allows you to focus on what truly matters without feeling overwhelmed. Saying no doesn’t make you selfish it’s a form of self-care.

6.    Hobbies and fun activities

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it is very easy to forget about the things that you enjoy doing. No matter what the hobby is, always makes sure you make time to do the things that you enjoy i.e. crochet, gardening, playing an instrument or reading. Engaging in hobbies is a great way to disconnect from stress and help bring joy into your life.

Enjoying your hobbies not only reduces stress but it also sparks creativity and boosts your mood. Set aside some time to enjoy a hobby that you love – you’ll soon find that it’s an instant stress reliever.

7.    Taking regular breaks through the day

Whether you’re working, studying or taking care of responsibilities at home, it’s important to take regular breaks to help ease the tension/stress. Working continuously throughout the day not only increases burnout but increases stress. Taking short breaks throughout the day – whether that be a walk to the coffee machine, going to wash some pots or even a quick stretch will help to refresh your mind and body. Having these small breaks will help with improving focus, reduce tension and will help to boost productivity.

8.    Simply laugh more

You may think this is funny (no pun intended) but try to laugh more. Laughing releases endorphins and helps to lower cortisol levels which are linked to stress. Whether that be watching a funny movie, hanging out with your close friends or simply just enjoying a good laugh with your work colleagues.

If you find ways to laugh every day, you’ll start to notice how much lighter and relaxed you feel.

Final thoughts:

Stress is an inevitable part of life; it doesn’t have to control you. By implementing these detailed strategies – whether it’s through doing any of the methods above, doing them daily will help to reduce stress and cultivate a more balanced fulfilling life.

Small changes will help to have a lasting impact on your overall well-being. Prioritising self-care is not being selfish it’s essential for leading a happy and healthy life.

Take one step at a time and always remember that manging stress is a journey, not a destination.
